WHO IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR?
This assesment is suitable for people who have completed a 3* sea kayak training course within 3 years or less of the assessment date and who are comfortable paddling in force 3. (Up to 10 knots/11.5 mph / 5.15 m/s wind speed and associated wave action)
Some clubs and kayak rental companies accept 3* certification as proof that you are competent to join in club trips. It also helps commercial orgainsations to decide if your skill level is high enough for their courses and to rent equipment.
And it helps you to "know where you are" on the skills spectrum.
A person who holds 3* is considered to be "a competant paddler, to be part of a led group, operating in conditions of up to Beaufort scale force 3 winds and wave conditions"
Please note that the price does not include the certification cost which is payable to the Scotish Canoe Association. Currently £12 for SCA members and £25 for non-members
PADDLING SKILL LEVEL?
The recommended skill level for this trip is defined by the BCU/SCA as someone whose performance at this level indicates that a candidate can consider themselves as an able improving sea paddler rather than a beginner.
DURATION AND DISTANCE.
The assessment takes place over one full day. The distance is flexible and will be different for each group of candidates, but we won't be trying to wear you out! We will start off with a trip planning session and agree a suitable 3 to 4 hour trip. Along the way we will cover the requirements of the sylabus, see some scenery and have some fun.
WHAT SEAFREEDOMKAYAK PROVIDE?
At 3 star, clients usually come with some or all of their own kit. But if you don't have something that you need, we can usually provide it. For a 3* assesment, the candidate is expected to know what they need. If the you don't already have something yourself, you will need to ask for it without prompting.
